Your wedding cake isn’t just a dessert—it’s a centerpiece, a photo-worthy moment, and a sweet symbol of your love. But how do you make sure it’s the right size for your big day? Too small, and you might run out of slices; too big, and you could end up with more leftovers than you know what to do with! From guest count to tier choices and serving sizes, this guide will help you find the perfect balance so your wedding cake is just right.
It's not just about the number of portons however! Deciding what size you would like you wedding cake to be rests on a number of key things ..When taking bookings for wedding cakes, these are just some of the things i will be asking you as a wedding cake maker when we discuss the design of your ideal wedding cake.
Aesthetics: How you would like your cake to look and how it will be presented at your venue?. As a cake designer who has made cakes for so many different types of wedding venue, from rustic barns and tipi weddings to modern inner city venues, stately homes and historic abbeys, one piece of advice I would give for sure is to allow your venue to influence the size and vibe of you wedding cake. When visiting your venue and considering which cake your room will be displayed, take note of of key aspects such as the size of the room and height of the ceilings. Often, a good sized three-tiered cake can suddenly look very lost in a huge room. Don’t feel as though this means you need to have a huge cake with hundreds of portions. You may simply not need that much cake! There are lot of tricks us skilled wedding cake bakers can use to elevate your cake without extra portions including dummy tiers, clear acrylic tiers, floating tiers and other decorative tricks. Getting in contact and booking an appointment to discuss all of these things with your cake designer is an incredibly good idea.

Budget: In an ideal world, money would be no object and cost wouldn’t be a factor in guiding your decision about what size of cake to choose. However, this is rarely the case and most couples need to set some kind of budget when it comes to choosing their dream wedding cake. Here at Handmade by Hannah we always try to liaise with our customers to create a wedding cake which fits within their budget. Please don’t hesitate to contact Hannah to discuss your wedding cake options further
Number of Guests; Determine how many guests will be attending the wedding and let your cake maker know, it is potentially one of the first questions i ask my clients. Generally, a standard serving size is about 1 inch by 1 inch – often known as a ‘finger portion‘. If you’re having a large wedding, you may want to consider ordering a larger cake or additional serving cake to ensure that all guests can enjoy a slice. When it comes to portions, think outside of the (cake) box If multiple tiers of cake aren’t what your heart desires, why not consider adding some cupcakes to your order. Cupcakes can be be designed to match beautifully with you main and can be made in a variety of different flavours..take a look at our wedding cupcakes page for some cupcake inspiration
